Help me give my students card stock, easel pads, pencil pouches for crayons, flash cards, bingo chips, painters tape, and colored pencils.
My students are incredible. I have twenty-four motivated English Language Learners who are eager to learn. My students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds with limited resources available to them. We are a Title I, Performance Improvement School with a one hundred percent free lunch program. Many parents work two jobs and are struggling to support their families.
Though their environment may not be conducive to learning, my students have an insatiable love of learning.
I know that if we provide them with the right support, resources, and opportunities, they can experience success.
Math is one of my favorite subjects to teach. My goal is to have my students leave with a strong number sense as they go into 3rd grade. You need a strong number sense before learning how to count coins. Financial literacy is just as important as reading and writing. I want them to be able to see a collection of coins and add it up quickly. The flash cards will keep them on their toes by reviewing previous concepts in math.
We are also learning about arrays and I have asked the students to look for examples of arrays in markets, home, and here at school.
They came in with so many great examples that we have decided to make an art piece. We will build an “Array City” out of the card stock. They will draw and use the colored pencils to create an array and make it into a building using row and columns. Then we will put it on the easel roll as if it were a city skyline to display in the hallway. Using different color card stock will make it “pop” with color.
The pencil pouches will house their colored pencils. We use anchor charts all the time so having the self stick easel paper is a necessity. We can move the charts without having to use push pins. The bingo chips will be used when we count collections. Once they master collections I will move on to coins. We are building a strong foundation in math so students can be successful when learning a new math concept or skill. And last, the blue tape will be used to put up artwork without destroying our walls.
