Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located in an urban area. The school has an estimated enrollment of about four hundred fifty students for the 2018-2019 school year in grades TK-5. Additionally, we house a state pre-k program. About 97.7% of the students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, and 79.4% are English language learners. The school is a dual language school, so instruction is taught in both English and Spanish.
The students at our school are wonderful children who need a little extra support to reach their goals.
Our school is located in an economically depressed area, and our school district has recently gone through a battery of budget cuts that have left us struggling to meet student needs.
We are on a mission to provide an intellectually stimulating, culturally prosperous, and socio-emotionally supportive environment for every child through collaboration and reflection between the school, parents, and community.
My Project
With nearly the whole school qualifying for free breakfast and lunch, most families are not able to provide snacks for their children to help fight off hunger between meals.
By our morning recess time, most students are hungry and need some fuel to help keep their energy levels up.
I have found that when I don't have snacks available, headaches and stomachaches increase. Kids then sometimes go home because they are not feeling well, and they miss part of the school day.
My students need dried fruit leather and Clif Bars to satisfy their hunger and help them make it through a long day of learning.
