I teach first grade to some amazing students! I have 14 students this year in our classroom community. More than half of my students come from low-income households. Our school is a community school which means we provide additional services to our students based on need.
I would like to ensure I have enough bulk snacks for at least half of our school year.
Learning cannot occur before basic needs are met. I know I cannot think when I am hungry. I want to make sure my wonderful students' learning is not interrupted by hunger.
My Project
My students will have a daily healthy snack as a class. They need fuel to keep them engaged in academic learning. Not all of my students are able to bring a daily snack from home.
Eating is also an opportunity for social time at school.
My students will be engaging in social language while they eat together as a classroom community.
In our classroom, we also share responsibilities such as serving each other snack. My students will have the chance to be a "snack helper" and use measuring cups to portion out snacks to peers. Yes, snack time also helps us practice our growing math skills!
