My students are enthusiastic and curious about everything, including the spider on the floor, the letter B, and how the pencil sharpener works. They come from more than eight different linguistic and cultural backgrounds and include students with special needs and students who have experienced trauma.
Many of my students' parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, cousins, aunties, and uncles have all attended our neighborhood school and you can feel love and a strong sense of community throughout the building.
Within our diverse school family, one of the things my students are most excited about is each other. They love to learn and play together and our school day is filled with giggles, questions, tinkering, dancing, and conversations. It is a joy and a privilege to get to learn and grow with these amazing humans every day.
My Project
Everyone has basic needs that must be met in order to be healthy and happy and food is one of the most important. I challenge my Kindergartners to think critically, problem solve, be creative, and be compassionate every day. And they cannot achieve these powerful goals when they are hungry.
Many of my students arrive at school without having eaten breakfast and without snacks or lunch packed from home.
When they are hungry it gives me so much joy to be able to give them food and my joy is nothing compared to theirs. Then once their tummies are full the learning can begin!
