This group of students has inspired me with their love and excitement for learning. I've seen many of these students grow up through the years - knowing them since they were in Kindergarten or 1st grade. They make me so grateful to be a teacher - with their smiles, hugs, and passion.
My students are all from low-income households, with 100% receiving free lunch.
Some of the families struggle to provide basic needs for the children. Even with the struggles that families face, the students are happy, positive learners.
I find myself going "the extra mile" for my students (past and present). I want to make learning fun for them because they bring so much joy to my heart. It breaks my heart that so many of these students need help just having their basic needs met.
My Project
This project is close to my heart. Although all of the students at my school receive free lunch, there are still times when I know they are hungry. We have an extended school day, so the days are really long. Snack time is almost a necessity. More often than not, the students don't have any snack to eat from home. So, all they can do is save something from their breakfast or lunch to eat during snack time. But, then they aren't full enough from breakfast or lunch!
These snacks will allow my students to focus on the most important thing - their education!
I can't imagine what some of my students have to put up with or work through. It's not right, it's not fair. No child should ever have to be hungry. That's one of the basic necessities. When they are hungry and that necessity is not fulfilled, they can't put forth their best effort. If they are hungry, they aren't learning.
Help me ensure that every single student in my class is NEVER hungry. I plan to pass out these snacks during the day and also send some students home with emergency snacks - just in case. That way, I'll know my students are well-fed and ready to learn!
