We recently had our 100th day of school and so I gave what I thought was a fun writing assignment asking the students what they would do if given $100. I had thought I would read responses about them wanting to buy the latest video games, unicorn toys, etc. Instead, I was heartbroken to read that my students were wanting to buy snacks for recess time, clothes that fit, and a new pair of shoes.
Over 70% of the amazing and kind students at my school are living below the poverty level.
I teach fantastic fourth graders at a Title 1 school in Simi Valley, California. Although they are given a free breakfast and lunch each day, they get hungry for a snack at recess. I've been supplying snacks, cereal, and fruit but the costs add up. I need snacks to feed my hungry fourth graders.
With this donation, my amazing, hardworking, and kind students will receive healthy snacks to eat at recess and keep them going throughout the day.
It's hard to teach a hungry student, let alone, 34 hungry students.
Although most receive free breakfast and lunch, they don't always arrive in time for breakfast, or they become hungry a few hours later around recess time. I would love to prevent every hunger pain that my students experience at school by providing snacks. Having snacks readily available will prevent hunger and embarrassment. Meeting their hunger needs will help me to meet their educational needs as well.
