Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a school counselor at an urban high school with over 220 students on my caseload. My students are very diverse with many of them coming from economically disadvantaged homes. 70% of them receive free or reduced lunch and face various barriers to achieving academic success. They come from homes where food is scarce and where there is not enough money to pay for life's essentials, such as clothing, utilities, and school supplies. Many have experienced trauma and have difficulty getting to school regularly. In fact, nearly 25% of my students are chronically absent from school.
My students are hardworking, dedicated, and most importantly, resilient.
Each and every one of them has the potential to be successful. I want to equal the playing field for my students so they have all the tools necessary to excel academically, as well as emotionally.
My Project
Many of my students come to school hungry. They rely on free school meals as they do not have enough food at home but sometimes this is just not enough for their growing bodies. Can you imagine how difficult it is to focus on academics when you haven't eaten since yesterday? Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for my students to miss meals when they are home.
When my students' stomachs are full, they will be ready to learn and excel in all areas!
I would love to be able to provide healthy and filling granola bars and almonds to my hungry students. Food insecurity is common at my school. This project will feed my students and help them focus while in class.
