It has been incredible to work in a school with students who have such a strong love for reading. I am a teacher of 20 fifth graders at a high poverty elementary school in rural Maine. My students come from all different backgrounds with a variety of learning styles and reading levels. Despite the different learning styles and levels, I like to create a positive experience so that ALL students can enjoy picking up a book and reading it!
When new books are put out, it's like Christmas morning - all of my students share the excitement and joy of picking up and reading a new book.
My students are voracious readers who are waiting to discover adventures in the newest titles.
Many of my students do not have access to books at home and rely on our school library to check out high-quality books. Each day students want to know when the newest books by their favorite authors will be added to the library and if they can be first to check it out. These students are passionate about books and have a very strong love for reading in our school.
My Project
When reading a GOOD book, my students can escape the daily struggles that they face. They find a spot where they feel comfortable to relax and adventure through a book with the main character.
In my classroom, students spend 30 minutes each day reading a book of their choice independently.
I chose the interactive read-alouds pack because it has a wide variety of genres and reading levels. I had my students fill out reading surveys so that I could choose books that I KNOW they will enjoy. Students will be able to check these books out to read during independent reading and to take home and read! I have some male students who have a really hard time finding books that interest them, I chose The Lightning Thief because when they have a Percy Jackson book, they don't stop reading. I chose Ghosts because it is an easier read (it's a graphic novel) for my lower leveled readers! I made sure to choose a variety of books so that there is a book that will interest each student.
If this project gets funded (fingers crossed), I plan to hold a book tasting. During the book tasting, refreshments will be served and my students will have the opportunity to walk around the room and preview NEW books! The books will then be placed into the classroom library so that students can check them out and grow their love for reading even more!
This will get my students invested into the classroom library and excited about reading for the year and for many more years to come!
