Mrs. Alvarez from Houston TX is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need to be exposed to reading for pleasure and need the resources to get them started.
My students face many obstacles in life that I cannot even imagine having to overcome. A vast majority of them come from socio-economically disadvantaged homes. For some, the only meals they eat in a day are the ones provided at school. Some have had to miss school because their parents had to go to work and couldn't find or afford a babysitter for their younger siblings. Additionally, all of my students were deeply impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Not only did they all lose two weeks of valuable instruction last year, but many were trapped at home without power. Some were even displaced due to damage caused by flooding. A tornado touched down less than five miles from our campus.
Despite the challenges, these students face on a daily basis and the challenges that they continue to encounter in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, they come to school ready to learn, with a desire to improve themselves so that they can improve their circumstances.
As a sixth-grade math teacher, I want to be able to provide my students with the resources, skills and practices that will launch them towards the life they desire.
I want to start a book club at my school where students can all read the same book at the same time and talk about what they've experienced through the pages of the book. Currently, the only time they get this opportunity is during their ELA class. With limited resources, our library allows for two students to read the same book at the same time.
Many of our students love reading and have expressed an interest in reading books with their friends, but their families can't afford to buy them books so that they can be a part of a book club.
With your donation, our students will be able to read for pleasure and discuss popular books with their peers. For the first time, many of these students will having the beginnings of their first personal library. Some are even starting new personal libraries in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. With this opportunity, I am hoping that they will develop a greater desire to read and improve their vocabulary. My students will be extremely grateful for your donation. I can't wait to share with them the good things that can come in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
