Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are sixth graders in a multicultural urban community. We have an extremely limited budget with minimal support from our local government to fund basic supplies.
These students love their neighborhood school because it creates a sense of community.
This is especially important because many of the students come from broken homes. They are excited to learn but often times do not have access to the same materials that other students have from surrounding districts which leaves them at a disadvantage.
My Project
If you visit our classroom on any given day, you will find students all over our room sitting on little chairs on the floor reading books for pleasure. They have ample opportunities to read independently and read what they love. I have a lot of boys in my classroom that were hard to motivate at first until we started our unit on Ancient Greece and Greek Mythology. I have a few books from my personal collection on the topics and they have not been able to put them down. They trade them, they reread them. It's amazing to watch and I don't want it to end. Many of these graphic novels are based on books I have in my classroom. It is my hope that after reading the graphic novels, my boys will be drawn to the original books as well, and that our silent reading time will become a joyful time for them.

My students crave stories, but they are not used to getting their stories through reading. With these graphic novels, my students will become not only people who CAN read, but also people who DO read. A person who reads for pleasure can read for any purpose. Doors open for readers.
