Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are hungry, not only for food, but also for the knowledge they gain from books. My student's favorite part of the day is when they are reading in small groups or independently. Each day I meet with a small reading group for guided reading and this is what they love!
My students attend a public charter school in the community of Compton, CA.
Many of my students do not own books to read at home. There is no library at our school, and we have a limited classroom library. My students love getting comfortable on our carpet and choosing a book basket to read from. They appreciate the books we do have, however, many of our books are starting to fall apart as they have been used for many years. I bought all of them used, wherever I could find them. Most of my student's families have a difficult time getting to the public county library. I want my students to have a bigger selection of books and ones that are also culturally relevant for my diverse classroom. Half of my students are English Language Learners, and I believe it would benefit them to have bilingual books in our classroom library as well.
My Project
These books will be added to my classroom library for students to access any time they please. Library is also a center rotation I have daily, so the students will use these books to read independently during center time. These books will also be used to introduce and tie in to lessons in our curriculum. I also model fluency through whole class read alouds that my students love. I allow them to choose the book I read to the class, which also engages them. They would be very excited and thankful to have new books that spark their interests added to our classroom library. The book organizers will help the students take care of the books and be responsible when taking out or putting them away. The chair socks will help eliminate noise and distraction for my students while they are reading. The chairs can be very loud even when slightly moved across our tile floor.
These books will increase their phonics and reading comprehension skills.
These books will help students to move up reading levels. Lastly, these books will further their love and interest for literacy. These books will contribute to their success in school and greatly impact their lives for the better. "One child, one teacher, one pen, and one book can change the world."
