All of my students come from families that battle the struggles of poverty, trauma, living in the shelter system or projects, in a neighborhood where gunfire is a daily occurrence. In addition to their personal struggles outside of school, each of my students has a learning disability and has had many failures in their short educational carriers before entering my classroom. Having looped with most of my students has been a blessing because I truly get to know their needs and cater to learning to meet their individual needs.
In a community plagued by violence and poverty, students should have the comfort knowing that school is a safe place where they can get their needs met.
All too often my students do not like the food in the cafeteria or it's just not enough to feed their hungry bellies. Hungry bellies make for hungry minds and can impact a students ability to learn. In my classroom, I aim to ensure no one ever goes hungry, as food outside of the school building can sometimes be scarce. Some of my students rely on school as their main food source. Having snacks readily available can help ease students anxiety to concentrate.
My Project
Have you ever had a rumbling stomach and tried to learn? Isn't it impossible to concentrate? For many of my students school is their main source for food each day. When students enter my classroom each day, no matter what time, the first thing I always ask is "are you hungry" and/or "did you eat." Ensuring my student's have had enough to eat before learning means that I get them at their best for learning engagement.
No one, especially young learners, should have to worry about when they will eat next, how, or from where.
With your help, I can help elevate my students stresses around food so they can concentrate on learning. Your donation will make it possible for snacks to always be available for students who don't like the cafeteria food, need more to eat or even something to go home.
