This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from a school in the district where over 80% of the students are poverty-stricken. All students at this school receive free or reduced-price breakfast, and lunch, as well as two snacks per week.
My class consists of eighteen third-grade students who are in a low-income community.
The class has a diverse group of students. Many students in my class are part of the ELL program at this school. This means that most of my students do not speak English as their first language. The school is extremely large with around 700 elementary school students. Because of this, we stretch materials as far as we can for our students. With students also coming from a low-income community, it leaves teachers constantly picking up the slack to make sure all students' needs are met. Although there are many challenges I face daily, there is nowhere else I would rather make a difference than this school!
My Project
Food, something we can so easily access as adults. Yet we forget that students come from different environments and teaching in a low-income community it is incredible how many students come to school hungry. My students are guaranteed to get breakfast and lunch at school. But what about snacks?
So many students go home and are never offered dinner, so it is my job to make sure they do not go hungry at school.
Coming from a low-income home myself, I never went hungry. We always had food on the table so I could never imagine not having food at home. And not to mention, have you ever tried to learn on an empty stomach? Me either. I would love to incorporate a snack time into our day this year, but as we all know it's hard enough providing snacks for one child, how about 18? I could use your help in feeding my kiddos! This project would get us through the first two to three months of snack time! I have also listed some candies, as let's be honest, kids love to get some junk in their diet as well. Please consider helping me make sure my kiddos never go hungry on my watch. Thank you so much in advance!
