My students need Write in the Rain notebooks for an upcoming Service Learning Trip to Brazil. The humidity in the Amazon requires special paper for students to record their experiences.
My students are considered "at risk" for a wide variety of reasons. My program works with kids to help them stay on track to graduate, get back on track to graduate, make it through the day, or even to just make it through that class period. My students have no stereotypes but are stereotyped every day. They have concussions and can't be in classrooms with fluorescent lights, they have test anxiety, they are homeless or just put in foster care, they suffer from depression, hunger, lack of self-confidence. They have solid home lives or no home life. They have addictions or are on meds for ADD, ADHD, bipolar issues or anxiety issues. They are kids just struggling to find their place in this world and to make those solid choices that will move them forward. My kids are just that....kids.
My Project
Twenty-five of my students will be traveling with me to Manaus Brazil to conduct a service learning project in a village community along the Amazon River in April of 2018. My students have worked, saved, fund-raised, and scraped together their own funds to be able to have this once in a lifetime experience. We will be living on a traditional Amazon Riverboat for eight days while we conduct service projects in the local villages along the riverbanks. It rains daily in this part of the Amazon. Our clothes, our shoes, and our backpacks will be continuously wet.
Journaling is an important part of this experience, allowing students to write and forever document their thoughts and experiences.
Traditional notebook paper becomes too humid in this environment to write on; it also is too humid to attach anything to the paper (leaves, photos, etc). Using the Write in the Rain notebooks will allow my students to use a pencil to record their experiences. By writing down their thoughts and experiences, my students will have a permanent record of a trip that will change their lives.
