Humans of Highbridge: A Personal Narrative Project
My students need funds to print and bind their collection of personal narratives that dispel the stereotypes of our neighborhood. These funds will ensure that each student can receive his or her own copy.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are determined to overcome the barriers of our district in the Bronx: poverty and violence.
The deck seems stacked against our students in so many ways yet they show up every day with enthusiasm and determination to grow both academically and personally.
100% of the students on our campus receive free lunch yet most carry the great responsibility of becoming the first in their family to attend college.
To give them the tools necessary, we start with strong teacher-to-student relationships and then challenge each child with a rigorous literacy curriculum that helps them leave our middle school reading and writing at or above grade level.
My Project
"People who don't live here just want to talk about the dads who leave. But why don't we talk about the moms who stay? My mom is the key to everything."
At the beginning of April, we give our 7th graders a challenge: tell a story that changes what others assume about you."
My students need funds to print and bind their collection of personal narratives that dispel the stereotypes of our neighborhood. To prepare our students, we study the narratives of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Junot Díaz, and the stories of Humans of New York. Then, students draft, workshop, revise, and publish their own narratives.
The result is a powerful collection of narratives that reveal each student's truth about living life as a 12 year old in the Bronx.
By donating to this project, you will be providing the teachers the funds necessary to have this collection printed and bound. Each student will then receive his or her own copy of this meaningful, year-end project: Humans of Highbridge, A Highbridge Green School Student Narrative Project.
