My Students

My students are incredible. I teach in a college town with both a high university presence and a high poverty rate, which means that children with highly diverse backgrounds are together in the classroom. This creates an environment with multiple voices and allows me the opportunity to bring diverse perspectives into my curriculum.

I am constantly impressed by my students empathy and thoughtfulness.

They posses a capacity for emotional maturity that is rare among teenagers, and they are genuinely caring and kind. And, oh my goodness, are they smart. I constantly find myself raising the bar to keep up with and challenge them.

As a World Literature class, we strive to engage with diverse perspectives and consider our own roles in the world. My students engage in Restorative Justice practices to build a community that allows us to have tough and necessary conversations. I am constantly blown away by their voices, and I am truly enjoying the opportunity to watch them grow.

My Project

My classes are about to read The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, a coming-of-age story set in Afghanistan and the United States. The novel is powerful and eye-opening as it explores social justice issues including ethnic prejudice, poverty, and political unrest. The main character, Amir, is haunted by a decision he made in childhood and wrestles with guilt and forgiveness until an old friend offers him "a way to be good again."

By donating supplies to this project, you will partner in my students

using their voices and creativity to create awareness about human rights. We will be studying the United Nations' Declaration of Human Rights and talking about how those rights apply to current events. At the end of the unit, I would like students to create "kites" out of cardstock that represent one of the rights in the Declaration.

I have wonderfully artistic and thoughtful students who will enjoy and learn from this project. After creating their "kites," we will display them in my classroom and other locations in the school for other students to learn from. I am so excited about this opportunity to learn with my students, and we are are grateful for your support.
