Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our school has been teaching "at-risk" students in a successful learning environment for over 12 years. High percentages of our students enter high school performing below state averages in math and reading but leave our school admitted to city and state colleges. In our Humanities class, we spend much time discussing morality and laws in our history and our present. My students often see history as a dead subject, something that has already been documented and understood. I want them to consider how the issues of the past reemerge in their lives. In the spring semester will be study various International Human Rights issues. To make a connection to the past, we will create documentary films about human rights in today's world. We will screen these films to families, other students and the community. This film festival will create a community dialog about the issues in history and current events. To complete this project, we would need digital camcorders. The class will go outside the classroom to document local human rights issues or interview people about current international human rights issues. The digital camcorders will allow the students to express their views creatively through a new medium. Without a camera, it would be impossible to capture our films on class trips.
