Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Humanities teacher at Fannie Lou Hamer High School. Our school has been teaching "at-risk" students in a successful learning environment for 10 years. High percentages of our students enter high school performing below state averages in math and reading but leave our school admitted to city and state colleges. In our Humanities class, we spend much time discussing morality and laws in our history and our present. My students often see history as a dead subject, something that has already been documented and understood. I want them to consider how the issues of the past reemerge in the present day. To make this connection, we will spend next year making documentary films about human rights in today's world. We will screen these films in the summer to families, students and the community. This film festival will create a community dialog about the issues in history and the issues that remain potent in our world. To complete this project, we would need digital camcorders. Taking trips around the city and documenting the human rights issues we see is an essential part of the film. Without a camera, it would be impossible to capture our films on class trips.
