Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a middle school of approximately 410 sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. About 60% of our students receive free or reduced rate lunches. We estimate another 10% to be in similar need. At 30% Hispanic, 20% African American, and 50% Caucasian, we are very diverse.
As a Title I school, our financial resources are limited, and creativity within the classroom environment is essential to tap into each student's individual learning style.
Providing the best learning environment and classroom experiences have been my mission as a science and social studies teacher over the last 13 years.
My Project
With the rollout of the new state NGSS science standards and our adoption of a new science curriculum, our students are in need of hand-on learning tools to bring the curriculum to life through experiential learning.
Help me put hands-on experiences into my classroom for our new Human Energy science unit!
This brand new curriculum and unit on kinetic and potential energy focuses a lot on a real-life scenario of a rescue team saving flood victims. They go further to explain that they would rely on hand-crank flashlights and radios during this fictional crisis. Students then learn about potential and kinetic energy systems.
My need is for the actual devices described in the curriculum in order for my students to better understand how the devices work. Unfortunately, I have no such devices. Your generosity would bring the curriculum to life and help my students make better learning connections!
The hand crank flashlights would be used as models of how energy is transferred within a system. One would be opened-up to see the inside functionality. The hand crank radio would be opened up yet still operational to illustrate what these fictional rescue workers are utilizing throughout this Energy Unit!
