Teaching the Human Body to 5th graders is so exciting. However, using a textbook does not bring the concepts to life like the interactive apps available on iPads. I recently added a CUE conference and was amazed at what I could do with my students with the help of an iPad.
I teach at a public school with 415 students grades K-5.
The students are engaged and eager learners. At my site, we rotate the classes for science. Each teacher becomes an expert in a particular field. I teach the human body. I have found over the years that the engagement of the students is directly tied to hands-on activities and interactive activities that enhance the learning experience. The iPad has revolutionized teaching. Showing blood flow through veins and food being digested in the stomach makes the experience for the students and myself so real. I continue to marvel at the questions that students ask during the class. Our students push themselves and thrive to learn.
My Project
Teaching the Human Body must be an active experience. Have the use of 2 iPads will allow me to access resources to create projects to share with the students. In addition, it will allow students to access materials to participate in interactive academic games, create visuals, and work in groups to develop strong collaboration skills. For students to see the human body in action will create a richer experience and a deeper level of learning. I recently attended a CUE conference which demonstrated so many possibilities to make exciting, creative lessons. Students need more than a textbook to grasp a concept. An iPad can create that interactive classroom that allows learning to leave a lasting impression and an inspiration to search for further knowledge.
I have designed by human body unit to include nutrition as a component.
In today's world, nutrition is so important due to the epidemic of diabetes. Showing students through wonderful visuals, the effects of healthy eating is something that I hope my students carry with them throughout their life. One student told me that after leaving my class, she has never had a soda. The power of the iPad will greatly enhance my students' learning and keep all learning styles of my class engaged.
