Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I would like for the students to start a 1-mile run/walk program in the morning or afternoon. I will teach, monitor, and record to show growth or improvement. I will teach them that hypertension and obesity is a silent killer amongst our culture due to poor diet and no exercise. After taking the President's challenge test, I noticed that they needed to improve their fitness level. By allowing them to walk/jog a mile every day will improve their cardiovascular endurance. Giving each child a pedometer will allow them to think and see that walking/jogging is important. I'm a physical education teacher at C.H.Bynum Elementary School in Kinston, NC. We are 99% black and about 85% of the kids are on reduce lunch. We would like to have 25 pedometers. Our school enrollment is 240. All students will participate in this project. As stated before these kids need to be more physically fit. And having knowledge of becoming physically fit and to start now for their future should be a concern. This will be a start in their lives to prevent certain diseases; help stimulate their brain for readiness to learn; and help them to live a long productive life.
