Ask almost any 2nd grade student their favorite subject and the answer will likely be PE! Understandably so as this is the time when students typically get outside of the classroom to do their learning. PE time is essential and teaches many lessons besides the actual activity - teamwork, collaboration, and perseverance to name a few.
We teach a diverse group of 2nd graders in California with a wide range of learning abilities and backgrounds.
Our students love PE! California requires our students receive 100 minutes of PE per week. Our amazing PE teachers provide 50 of those minutes and classroom teachers are expected to fulfill the remainder. Our grade level PE supply closet looks very sad. We need new supplies to provide engaging personal exercise and group learning opportunities.
My Project
These items will allow our 2nd grade team the opportunity to teach lessons in cooperation, team-building, perseverance, and others in the form of PE. In the past, students have enjoyed playing with jump ropes, hula hoops, and soccer balls but our supply cabinet is depleted and we do not have enough equipment to teach a class lesson. These new items will replenish our supplies and enable us to utilize our 50 minutes of general education teacher-directed PE time effectively. Many of our students come from homes where they do not own any of these materials. In the past it has been inspiring to see students experience these items for the first time!
