I am the PE teacher at a Title I school, meaning I have around 500 students throughout the week from Kindergarten all the way up to Sixth grade. My students come from all walks of life, with a large majority living below the poverty line. My students are the future engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, artists, and musicians. These kids just need to know that their future is worth investing in.
Nothing is more exciting to these children than opening a brand new package that is meant just for them.
Like most kids today, the students at my school are in desperate need of exercise and practice for coordination. With my help, and yours, I believe we can pave the way to a heart-healthy lifestyle.
One of the best games my classes have ever played was called Hula Hut Throw Down. The game is simple, each team builds a hut made from 6 hula hoops, then try to knock down other teams huts with foam balls. All the students are active throughout the game. Several standards and skills are demonstrated, and my favorite part, they must work together. My students ask to play this game more than any other game we have played.
With a little imagination, a hula hoop can be the most important and useful part of an elementary Physical Education program.
Hoops can be part of an obstacle course, a base, a place holder, exercise equipment, a target, and so may other things.
The equipment I chose will supply even my largest class with enough hoops for each student to use. They will also aid in my ultimate goal of being able to color code games.
