I just started teaching my students, so I am still getting to know them. It is a very diverse school with students of varying interests from what I am told. The other physical education teacher I am co-teaching with informed me that many of the students enjoy physical activity and exercise. My school is in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, so all the students live in an urban area.
Again, since I am a new teacher in a school with over a thousand students, and I see nearly all of them; I am still doing my best to get to know them on an individual level as much as I possibly can.
It is my hope that I will get to know my students through engaging lessons that will warrant their interest in physical education. I will be more capable of engaging my students during lessons if I have the proper equipment and materials needed for physical education.
My Project
I am requesting hula hoops, jump ropes and large foam noodles for my students' physical education program. These materials will go a very long way in providing quality physical education and promoting physical literacy in my students.
Unfortunately, most standard hula hoops don't withstand the regular wear and tear that occurs during gym and recess.
Most of the hula hoops I have ordered a few months ago are dented and almost unusable. Hula hoops are a student favorite and I also have student build hula huts for various activities that supports their development in the affective domain.
Jump ropes are a great tool for cardiovascular fitness and a great skill for student to learn at a young age. I plan on doing a jump rope unit in my school and collaborating with the American Heart Association to promote cardiovascular health through a program they have. However, I can only do that if I have enough to jump ropes for all my students.
Lastly I am requesting large foam noodles to play a variety of tag games with my students. These games promote locomotor skills and spatial awareness. The noodles make the games far safer for the students. By having the tagger use a large noodle instead of their hand, we have far less trips and falls.
