Hula and Mele for Our Indigenous and Islander Students

Help me give my students several ukuleles for recreational use and performance. Also included in this order are a couple of books on hula, cultural traditions, and translations of songs, as well as one music CD.

My Students

Our PNW High school qualifies for Title I funding. We have a widely diverse population and terrific students with many struggles. Over 65% of our students receive free or reduced-rate lunch. Fourteen percent of our students are designated "English Language Learners." In one math classroom alone, students speak Arabic, Spanish, Tagalog, Mandinka, Fijian, Lao, Amharic, Chinese, and English. As school is closed right now, our high school is one of the main centers for families in the community to get meals. So this is not just for our school, but for all in our community, all grade levels and children arriving on a daily basis.

Our students are full of passion and doing their best to learn during this crisis with limited resources.

Many students are walking to school for meals every day during the COVID-19 crisis. Students can pick up a sack lunch and food for breakfast the next day.

While they come to school each day for their meal, many have no food at home, or during the weekends. Many of our families will not receive a stimulus check or qualify for unemployment because of their citizenship status. They need help beyond our basic nutrition program.

My Project

Access to these materials will help students learn about hula and help create ideas for next year's performances. Part of what we are doing is not just having students dance as if it's a pageant, but to really learn and understand the deeper meaning behind the dances and the overall culture of hula. The tradition of storytelling in indigenous cultures is the strength of their history and understanding.

Being proud of their traditions will increase the students' feelings of belonging and self-worth.

Students will be able to sing, dance, and play the ukulele. The small collection of ukuleles will provide all students an opportunity to participate. We have several students who can contribute, but do not have instruments.
