Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember the last time you felt like you made a difference? My special needs students need to be able to feel that as well. With the right equipment, they will be able to create and supply the neonatal ward with preemie quilts to provide a "hug" for as many babies as possible. A difference, yes!
My students are in grades 9-12+ with cognitive deficits.
They are the children that were once referred to as mentally retarded. My students live in a large inner city and many have never felt like what they do makes a difference. Academics remain very difficult and challenging for them while working with their hands allows them to feel successful.
With many electives being eliminated from our course offerings there are very few hands on courses available for my students. Teaching them to create baby quilts for the babies in the NICU will allow them to feel like they have made a difference in helping someone. The quilts will be a way for my students to give the babies a "hug" and let them know others care about them too!
My Project
I am requesting the basics to achieve our goal of creating the quilts for preemies. We need a minimum of two sewing machines, shears, pins, fabric, and thread. I am willing to pay for the batting, backing and any other supplies needed to accomplish our goal.
What will they take away from this? It's more than just the lasting effect of learning how to sew, which will carry over into a useful life skill needed in order to make basic repairs to our clothing. The satisfaction of knowing what a difference they made to both the babies and their parents will go a long way in increasing my students' self esteem and feeling of self worth.
My students are the most loving and honest young adults you would ever want to meet.
They often want to become involved, but are too often discourage by others for their short comings. This project is something that no one else in our school has done. What an awesome way of showing what our kids CAN do! Won't you help us Hug a Preemie?
