My students need guided reading books to improve their literacy and phonics skills. Students will use these books to practice reading skills on their appropriate level.
"Mrs. Huffman, I moved up a level! Mrs. Huffman, I love to read with you! Mrs. Huffman, I never want to stop reading." These three short phrases sum up why I love to teach. First grade is the year where students must make huge gains in reading, and I want to be able to support and encourage them.
My first grade class is energetic, creative, and eager to improve.
They are always looking for ways to practice and show what they have learned in the classroom. I guess you can say they like to "show off." These are traits we as teachers want in all of our students. I want to foster these traits so that my students can continue to be great learners. Our school is very supportive but is not always able financially to provide leveled books for all classrooms.
My Project
My students and I will use the level reading sets during guided reading. Guided reading is a time where I am able to sit down with a small group of students and work with them on their reading skills. Instruction is individualized based on the needs of the group of students. Students are able to read with their group and myself to help them become fluent readers. I can use the books to focus on a reading and phonics skill depending on the group. Books that are used during guided reading are on the students level to support students not to discouraged. When students become discouraged they lose their drive and determination to become better readers.
By helping to fund my project, I will be able to provide my students with a variety of literary text on various levels.
Having the variety of books will support my students in the classroom as well as at home. Students will be able to build their confidence in reading with a book that is appropriate for them. They will be able to see how far they have come throughout the year.
