Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are talented and creative! They also have very difficult lives. Unfortunately, they are in a school where over 80% of our school population lives at or below the poverty level. Getting their daily needs met can be a challenge.
It is a difficult task to teach students to love school because living in the city is quite a challenging experience.
Working in an inner city I get to see a variety of challenges. I see students who do not have many basic needs being met at home. Missing a meal or wearing dirty clothes is a common occurrence. Even with this type of hardship, they come to school with a smile on their face!
My Project
Every year we compare different versions of stories and our favorite is The Three Little Pigs! Titles like The Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark and The Three Tamales truly show students that you can make an old classic new, in fun and creative ways.
The problem is that we don't have all these books available to us.
We need these books to really make an impact. In addition to the stories we add a fantastic STEM project! Each student receives items to design a new house for the three little pigs. Then, the big bad wolf (the hair dryer) comes and tests out their designs. Using the design process my students get to explore in a fun and unique way! Having all of these item would make an amazing impact in my classroom.
