I am a 7th and 8th Grade Science teacher at an inner city school of about 450 students. We face many challenges. 78% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Also, we have 150 Burmese refugees enter our school within the past two years. It has been amazing to see the progress these Burmese students have made within the short time period we have had them.
One of the many ways we have been able to help these students progress this fast has been due to Rosetta Stone, which is a computer program. The only problem with having the students on Rosetta Stone is that it limits the computer use for all other classes. We have two computer labs, but the ESL classes use one of the labs all day. The second lab is used by our typing class for half of the day. I find it almost impossible to get my students into the computer lab.
I do what are called contracts in my class. Basically, it is a way for students to learn the material the way they learn best. They have activities such as word searches, crosswords, illustrations of vocab words, and many other research questions they can chose to do. My students LOVE doing the computer activities. We have two computers in our classroom, but that still isn’t enough. Probably only half of my students get onto a computer when we work on our contracts during class.
Having another computer in my classroom would be so helpful! Our state, Indiana, just decided they must cut 300 million dollars from our schools. We didn’t have the money before this cut, so how do we get the technology for our 21st century learners? As a result I am writing to seek your help in providing additional resources for my students. If we get the help we are seeking, we can make a big difference in the lives of these students.
