Book choice matters to kids in a big way! When students are able to choose a text that they connect with, this helps them to develop an understanding that reading is meaningful. It also helps to build students belief in themselves as readers. Most importantly, it helps students have enjoyable experiences with books.
My curious and imaginative students are currently questioning everything in the world around them!
In only 4 days of school I have been asked: What kind of bug is that? Are mermaids real? How do we know if our hissing cockroach is a boy or a girl? Do sharks live in the lake?
While curious and imaginative, my students are currently fragile readers. Many of them do not see themselves as readers, but yearn to be so. While my students have access to many fiction books on various levels, we are lacking in appropriate nonfiction text to support them. It is my hope by having appropriate nonfiction material, I can grow my students by giving the the opportunity to ask the tough questions and guide them in discovering the answers...on their own! All while learning to read!
My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy-after reading together, and with friends, they are eager to begin reading independently each day! Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind-I have watched students over mean years, and find nonfiction is what they are drawn to.
These books, will allow my students to grow as readers, and keep them asking the How, Why, and I Wonder questions that drive their curiosity.
These new books will also allow my readers to read independently at their own level. More importantly, they will also be able to choose books that interest them! What better way to grow their love of reading and help ensure they become life long readers.
