My students need mentor texts for writing How-To or procedural writing. We also need assorted highlighters for engagement and motivation when editing our writing pieces.
Our school is a Pre-K - 6th-grade campus in Montgomery, Texas. Our 2nd-grade class is made up of 20 students from different socioeconomic backgrounds. Some of my students are English Language Learners, and others are Gifted and Talented.
In our classroom, we are a family.
My students are eager learners who work hard and encourage each other to succeed! Our classroom community encourages a growth mindset. We also encourage each other to strive for Mustang P.R.I.D.E. - our character development program. Each day I see students demonstrating purpose, respect, integrity, determination, and excellence.
Some of our daily activities include reading workshop (read to self, buddy read, listening station, free writing, and word study), math workshop (math tubs, computer games, partner problem solving, iPad fact fluency), social studies, science, and more! We love centers and small group instruction time.
My Project
This project includes tried-and-true mentor texts by New York Times best-selling authors of children's stories. With attention-grabbing titles such as "How to Dress a Dragon" and real-life application such as in "The Pioneer Women's Cookbook", these resources will appeal to a wide variety of interests.
Second graders will be so excited to read and write just like our mentor authors!
With on-level texts, these books will provide an abundance of inspiration during one of our favorite writing units. Gail Gibbons and Lori Shores are masters of integrating science and literature for elementary students. We will love diving into the "How To Make" series featuring slime and rainbows!
My students will be jumping at the chance to edit their pieces with the assorted highlighters. We use the different colors for close editing. Blue is for finding capital letters. Pink is for punctuation. Yellow is for spelling. Green is for vivid verb choices.
