This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a school social worker at a high school in an urban school district. My students come from diverse backgrounds. In addition to school, many students have jobs and other responsibilities at home which add to their stress levels. My students struggle to manage social, academic, and home demands throughout their day. 67% of students receive free or reduce-priced lunch.

My students face many barriers to achieving academic success.

Many have experienced trauma and have difficulty coming to school regularly. When they do come to school, many struggle to achieve academic success in the classroom. They lack the coping skills needed to manage stress and find academic success.

My Project

These items will help my students engage in school and pass their physical education classes. Many of my students forget to bring clothes to change for gym class. When students are failing classes they are disengaged in learning and school. Failing classes keeps them from engaging with teachers and building positive connections with school staff. Providing t-shirts, shorts, and sweatpants to borrow will increase their chances of passing physical education class. Passing the class will help them reengage in school and build positive relationships with their teachers.

Many students fail physical education class due to not changing.

I want to help my students engage in school and build connections with their teachers by providing a variety of shirts, pants, and shorts to borrow on gym days. When students are successful at passing a class they feel more engaged in school and when they are more engaged in school they build positive connections and relationships with school staff. If changing for physical education class is a barrier to school attendance and connections to teachers then having clothes available to wear will help alleviate these barriers.

A system to borrow the clothes and return them at the end of the class will be established. The laundry basket will be used to collect the worn/borrowed clothes and the laundry detergent will be used to wash the shorts, sweatpants, and t-shirts so that the items are available for students to use the next day. One of our special education classes will learn vocational skills by being responsible for washing, drying, and folding the clothes each day.

This project will benefit all students that have physical education class and our special education students. Students will maintain relationships with their physical education teachers and reengage in school when they are successfully passing their physical education classes.
