This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach 18 second grade students that are excited to come to school but may be hesitant to go home. They may come from broken families or have lack of support at home. Others have help and have a lot of attention. All of them still need love and learning in their lives.
My class is very diverse in ability and I'd like to reach them all with different tools and strategies to teach them effectively.
This can be difficult to do in a lower income district where not all supplies can be given to each student, like technology. I do my best with what I can so they can be successful in school and take those skills to be responsible and respectful citizens in our community.
My Project
During guided reading rotations, students will be working with new words that are at their individual level. Each student will have be given a task to do with these materials for one of the stations called word work. Students will write the words, spell the words, stamp the words, etc.
I currently don't have the tools to do these things so students aren't interacting with the words.
With fun activities, students can become engaged in the words and enjoy playing with words. Magnetic letters, bananagrams, and stamps will be used for students to write words in a creative way. This keeps their interest and engagement so that they will hopefully remember the words easier. They will see these words in books and learn to spell them in their writing. This will help their reading and writing skills so they can become great readers!
