Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a wonderful 2nd graders who are eager to learn and put forth great effort in class with the materials we currently have. I work with a large culturally and linguistically diverse group of learners. 90% of our students are English Learners and 100% receives free lunch.

Studies in teaching techniques had just begun to pick up the fact that one-size-fits-all lesson plans are far less effective than ones that cater to specific learning styles. From visual thinkers to tactile learners, to listeners and readers, kids pick up information much faster when using their own special methods.

Arts programs are being cut in schools, supplies limited, and salaries frozen. Due to this and the fact that my students are high-poverty, their need for new technology is very strong yet unfulfilled. Adding an iPad mini to my art program would give them more exciting learning, opportunities! With the iPad mini, my students will gain a better understanding of math, language arts, and science concepts by integrating them all into my lessons. My students are technology-driven and many don't have computers at home. We are a high-poverty school. This will help guide my students as they become independent learners, making judgments, provide arguments, and learn to provide evidence.

My Project

One of the great uses for an iPad mini in our classroom is the combination of art and literacy. Several apps allow students to use their own art or photos as inspiration for writing. This can be a few, simple words added to images or poems or even digital storytelling. Photo-manipulation, animation, collage, art history, and art + math are all provided through amazing apps. Stop-motion and time lapse films can be created. Brushes provide technology in painting and drawing skills. Students become active participants in the creative process of learning. The possibilities are endless with new apps being developed all the time. They will have an opportunity to collaborate, share their creations with their peers, and critique each others work. The applications I have found the iPad Mini not only builds math fluency, but also enhance the student's reading and comprehension skills. The math and reading applications offer self-checking activities that reinforce Common Core Standards.

Please help my students learn and appreciate art.

With the help of the Lily Sarah Grace fund and other generous donors, my students will develop a love for art and these worthwhile art experiences will provide them with opportunities to create new ideas or projects.I want to create digitally work, repair mistakes, zoom, crop, and rotate makes the iPad mini a tool for collaboration in cross-curricular subjects. It is so important for students to learn technology in order to succeed in their future.
