Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are as diverse as New York City in race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation and ability. Our school demographics are sixty-two percent Hispanic, twenty-eight percent black, five percent Asian and three percent white, with over 85% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunches. My students come to school every day from all five boroughs with various needs, persevering against all the challenges life has thrown at them.
I have students who come to school with so little and students coming to school without breakfast and without backpacks.
Some cannot live at home with their parents and some do not even have a place to call home. Our students deal with many challenges including mental health issues, gun violence, and pregnancies. I want to be able to use my time with my students to provide them all with the educational opportunities they deserve.
My Project
To encourage more students to understand where their food comes from, and how to learn healthy nutritional habits, we are starting a school garden inside our classroom. The goal is for students to be able to grow all sorts of vegetables and herbs that they can then learn about and eat.
In order for our garden to blossom, we need supplies to help us grow it big and strong all year long!
Many of the supplies we require, such as soil pellets and grow trays will help us expand our garden footprint and give us more space to grow all of our seedlings. The rest of our materials will help us continue the growing process all year long, and keep those plants growing strong. Items like the Rapitest kits and dowels will help us maintain the proper conditions different species need to continue their grow cycles. If we can grow this garden strong, we will able to bring more students into the garden and use it as a teaching tool and for experiential learning. The more prepared we are with materials for our garden, the more students we can grow along with it!
