How to Harmonize: Preparing Future American Idols

My students need 50 choral folders with 50 warm-ups booklets and 100 recordable CD's so that all 50 students in the choir may rehearse vocal exercises at home while listening to their vocal exercise CD and reading along in their technique book.

Mrs. C. North Central High School
Indianapolis, IN Grades 9-12

I teach vocal music at a large (more than 3000) highly diverse, urban high school in Indiana. My students are in grades 9-12 but a majority of my students are ninth graders. In my beginning Women's Choir more than one-fourth of the class has some type of special need. Additionally more than a fourth of the class has English as their second language. More than 60 percent of this class is on free or reduced lunch. Many in the class are aspiring to become the first members in their family to attend college. The purpose of our choir class is to provide the students an opportunity to excel in school, prepare for future auditions for higher level ensembles, musical theater productions, solo opportunities, college scholarships and vocal competitions. The students in this choir do not have the financial resources for private music instruction The students get all their vocal training through our choir class.

The students in this beginning choir class are very enthusiastic about singing. However they do not have much background in audition preparation, performance etiquette, or vocal technique. They do not know how to read music, use singer's posture, rehearse on their own and present themselves properly for an audition. I work on these skills daily in class and they are making improvement. However to compete with the best singers they must rehearse daily on their own time. The 50 minutes daily in choir class will give them a good basis but will not level the playing field with their competition who has had years of private vocal coaching. By teaching my singers how to rehearse on their own I will give them an opportunity to improve their singing beyond the classroom walls. These students do not have instruments or materials at home that they can use when they rehearse. Through this proposal I want to prepare rehearsal folders for each of the 50 singers. The students will be able to instruct themselves through the use of these materials 24/7. The students will be empowered to develop their own rehearsal schedule and improve at a faster rate individually.

To prepare the rehearsal packets first of all I need 50 heavy duty choral music folders. Currently I am using donated paper folders for the students and these folders are not durable and easily rip. The folders that I am ordering are durable and easy to transport home in a book bag. I also want to provide an excellent booklet for each student of Vocal Warm-ups and Exercises that I have ordered through your music vendor. Finally I want to make two CD's for each student, one of the vocal warm-ups so that they can sing a long while looking at the warm-up book. This will improve their reading and ear-training skills as well as strengthen singing technique in breathing, tone quality and diction. I also want to make a CD of appropriate audition songs that the students can use for college choir auditions, vocal competitions, and other opportunities. Our school has identified three appropriate audition songs that are in the public domain that can be legally duplicated. The students will be able to practice their singing with the CD accompaniment on their own. I will also give the students a practice card so they will record how much time they rehearsed daily.

By funding this project you will empower my students to take responsibility for their singing improvement. You will help students with limited resources have the same opportunities as students who have had years of vocal training. You will provide students with hope of becoming the lead in the musical, singing in a college ensemble, winning a vocal competition or scholarship, or perhaps even being the next American Idol. Singers are fortunate to always have their instruments with them. You will help these young women develop their vocal instruments to the best of their ability so they have pride in themselves and aspirations for the future.
