My Students

I am a fourth-grade reading, writing and social studies teacher at a Title One school in Virginia. We are a Pre-K through 8th grade building. Our school has the largest ELL population, one of the largest populations of students receiving special education services, and are home to the French National program. My two classes consist of approximately fifty students, including students receiving special education services, English Language Learners, as well as gifted learners.

For many of my students, school is more than just a place to learn, but a source of stability and nurturing.

Some of my students have been through more in their young lives than most adults. My hope is to provide the students with a safe and fun place to learn! Over the years, I have worked very hard at turning our classroom into our "Home Sweet Classroom"!

My Project

Have you ever tried to catch a leprechaun? We have! Every year we have a functional text unit. The students learn about the different types in reading. Then the students are supposed to use the writing process to create their own. Very often students write a menu or explain how to make a sandwich. Well, we made learning even cooler!

Every year, the students design and build a leprechaun trap!

They begin by collecting materials and sketching their plan. Then they bring their design to life and create their trap. On St. Patrick's Day, we set the traps and hope to catch those sneaky leprechauns and steal their gold!

Once the students have completed their traps, they begin the writing process. Each student writes step by step directions, with illustrations, on how to build their trap. This activity brings out their creativity and makes learning SO much fun!
