I teach sixth grade World History in rural Tennessee. We are a Title I school, with 85% of students on free or reduced-price lunch. We do not have many resources at our immediate disposal for research on projects assigned during the school year.
Throughout the year we study several ancient civilizations and their beliefs. Mythology is a significant part of the belief system of these civilizations and as such an important aspect of our studies. We discuss the myths of creation, how myths are used to explain natural events and how similar these myths are in different civilizations.
The students complete an end of year project which includes the presentation of a myth from one of these civilizations. The students present these myths dressed up as a storyteller from that civilization. It is difficult to find age appropriate copies of these myths on the Internet, so I rely on books. Unfortunately, our school and county libraries do not have many books on myths other than Greek and Roman.
We need mythology books from a variety of different civilizations; these will provide students with the myths they need to complete this fun and engaging project.
This project provides an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the cultures we study. It engages their creative talents, presentation skills and self expression. I love to see them when they present their myths! From costumes to props to actual scenery, these students are amazing! Even with the challenges of trying to read difficult texts, they have been very successful. Providing them with a text on their level will enable them to soar!
