This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach kindergarten in a high poverty/inner city school in Tennessee. I do the best I can to give these children the most valuable learning experience possible, and to let them experience learning in different ways. I want them to try things they wouldn't normally get to try at home, or even in another classroom.
These children have more uncertainty and stress when they leave my classroom, than I could ever imagine. They do not know if they will go home to an empty house or even have dinner that night. People are coming and going from their home, and these children are going from home to home.
I cannot ask the children to send in supplies or money because their families do not have the finances. My students absolutely love to create and try new things, especially new foods. They love to listen to new music as well. They are very interested in learning how to have good manners and be "proper."
The resources I need are very simple, but imperative to a classroom and child's learning experience. I need multicolored construction paper and various colors of paint so that my children can create an assortment of projects that extend from their imaginations. We also need mini whiteboards so that we can practice math facts and spelling all together.
These students are not used to having "things" and typically get pushed to the side or just to watch television at home. With your generous donation, I have a chance to bring these children to life and let them see that learning occurs in all different ways. We don't need to worksheets to assess our knowledge, because we are only 5 years old, and worksheets are no fun. With these simple supplies we can turn a lesson into something magical. And after all, that's what learning is all about...
