How Similar Is the Internal Anatomy of Rats and Sharks?
My students need shark and rat dissection specimens for our labs during our zoology semester. While this is expensive, it is only providing 1 specimen per 5 students.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are eager to have some hands-on science experiences. Being in a school with a very tight budget, the students have had very few science labs with previous teachers. To teach science well, lab supplies are essential. Sadly, they can be expensive and are consumed every year.
During my first day of school, one of the students asked me to "not give up on them like their last teacher," which broke my heart.
I am determined to make my upper level science class an amazing experience for these deserving students and to show them science is relevant, exciting, and teaches them so many life skills like self-discipline and collaboration.
My Project
This semester my students are studying the major groups (phyla) of animals. The students have been very excited about this material, but they are anxious to do more hands-on activities to see these interesting animals up close. So far the animals we have studied are microscopic. I have some future veterinarians, doctors, and healthcare workers who are dying to finally see organs in real life.
I feel it is critical for all students to have a basic understanding of their own anatomy by doing a mammalian dissection.
We need rat and shark dissection specimens. This will be many of my students' first dissection or even first true lab experience despite being upperclassmen. I've bought many lab supplies throughout the year out of my own pocket and have applied for grants, but I am running out of time to find any additional funding for these specimens. Any amount would help! Thanks for your consideration.
