Being able to assess the safety of freshwater sources is an important skill for anyone. It is such an important skill that it is a major goal of the NC Standard Course of Study for 8th grade science. Our curriculum goals state that students must be able to assess a water source's pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen content and ammonia content. The best way to learn these concepts is, of course, to test actual samples. The Deluxe Water Quality Education Kit from Carolina Biological Supply has enough test kits for the entire team (working in partner groups) to be able to conduct tests. It also includes a teacher's manual and a CD-rom of activities.
