Did you know that there is a difference between the game of tag and the game of freeze tag? In a world that's ever-changing, our children nowadays know a lot more that they let on.
My class of kindergarten students are very talented and eager learners that are always bursting with (what they believe) are new discoveries that they are always excited to share with others.
We are located in a multicultural, yet high poverty community, with almost all of our students receiving free lunch.
My Project
Each year, when we get around to our nonfiction writing unit, my students would feel incapable of sharing topics on what they feel they know a lot about. However, once the unit is coming along, suddenly they all feel like they are experts at everything you can name. What I am requesting now, are nonfiction texts to launch our nonfiction unit, and use as text models of how other authors write about topics they know a lot about, and would like to teach their readers.
Contrary to popular belief, children are not blank sheets of paper that are waiting for adults to spoon-feed information to them.
Instead, like sponges, they soak up as much as they can take in from the environment around them. They learn games that we never even heard of by making them up with their friends. They are experts at a lot of things, that as adults, we are too busy to pay attention to in our daily lives. It it time to teach them how to go about sharing the information they know.
