Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an ATPE teacher who teaches Special Education at a Title I school where 67% of our students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. While we do get some extra federal funding to help our students succeed, that money is earmarked for projects that directly impact standardized testing scores.
My students are all special in their own unique way and they all tend to do things in their own special timing.
This means that they all need a little extra special help during the day for math, reading and/or social skills. I provide this extra special help in my Resource classroom for Kindergarten through 5th grade students, many times at the same time! Although it may seem like controlled chaos at times, my students really work hard and make a lot of growth through the year.
My Project
Many of my special education students struggle with basic math skills that they will need to survive in the "real" world like counting money, telling time, making change, etc. This project will provide fun math activities that teach them about counting money that they can complete independently. These include money rods, money stations and a money equivalency activity.
My students love any opportunity to be independent and these activities will give them that opportunity.
They don't need to be able to read on level to complete these learning games which will boost their confidence and their independence. Having confidence and independence will make a huge difference in their learning for the rest of their lives.
