My students need digital timers to practice their fluency in reading.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Do you know how many words that you can read in a minute? Well, my fifth graders would love to keep a record of how many words that they can read in a minute. By having these digital timers, my students would be able to practice their fluency reading by timing themselves.
My students are students that are excited to learn!
They are 10 year olds that love do things that are new to them. They are also active in their learning. My students are eager to explore new possibilities. Nothing will stop my students from learning and reaching their potential. My students attend a public school and is from a middle-low income community. Many fifth graders do not read out-loud anymore. Their parents do not enforce the importance of reading aloud but reading aloud is one of the major factors of fluency. If my students are able to time themselves reading and keep record of their wpm, their fluency will increase. Digital timers would give my students the excitement of keeping track of their wpm and give them the encouragement of improving their wpm.
Fluency is very important for everyone. I remember being one of those students who could not read orally. When I was chosen to read in 5th grade, I remember the sighs of my classmates. I do not want my students to feel like I did! By having digital timers, my students will keep track of their fluency by knowing how many words they can read in a minute. By knowing this, my students will try to improve on a weekly basis. My students will self motivate themselves to improve their wpm, which to me is better than having a parent or a teacher motivate them!
By having these digital timers, my students will be able to time themselves reading for a minute on a bi-weekly basis.
Their fluency will increase throughout the school year. Fluency is important for everyone and to practice in the fifth grade will make them better readers not only now but in the future too.
