How Many Supplies Can We Fit in a 1st Grader's Pencil Box?

My Students

"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime". I am teaching my students to "fish", but to do that I need to give them the "net". I want the most challenging part of my students' day to be what they are learning, not to be finding a pencil.

Let's be honest, no one likes too see summer break go.

But, one thing that made starting a new school a little less painful was going shopping for school supplies. New crayons, pencils, scissors etc. were all bought and taken in on the first day. I want to give my students this experience. I want them to feel excited and ready to learn by supplying them with the basic supplies they'll need to have a great year! My school is a small country school in South Carolina. Our entire school receives free lunch because most of our students live in poverty. My students do not live in an area where they have access to buy school supplies easily. Also most of their families can not afford such items. My students have many obstacles to overcome to receive the most out of their educational experience. I do not want "not having a pencil" to become one more reason they struggle.

My Project

All of the requested resources (except the journals) will be housed in my students' personal pencil boxes (which I have already purchased for them). Each student will keep their own pencil box at their desk and will be responsible for their supplies. While of course pencils and paper seem obvious school supplies, students will also need other supplies to finish their work. In first grade cutting, coloring, and gluing are common components to the work day so scissors, crayons, and glue sticks become necessities. The dry erase board markers will be put to use on their personal dry erase boards which we use for quick reviews, lesson checks, and as a great way to make a lesson more fun! One thing I try to teach my students is not only how to use these supplies, but also how to take care of them. We check desks daily to make sure all supplies "made it" at the end of each day. If supplies are missing or broken we fix the issue then so learning can take focus the next day.

This project has been created to allow my students to start the school year off right.

They will now have the necessary personal supplies to create work and learn. Having these supplies easily available will allow students to focus on what they are learning as oppose to focusing on "how can I complete this without the materials". With every student having these essential and identical supplies they will all start off the year the same and with no child being at a disadvantage.
