This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
My students have been showing so much growth over the past year, both musically and socially. We have worked a ton this year on collaboration, as they work to engage in more creative movement, ensemble-based music-making, folk dancing, and group composition. On February 28th, we were able to host our first performance, a Black History Month Showcase, as Stephanie Tubbs Jones School and my first performance since returning to the music classroom. While the students were nervous, they did exceptionally well and enjoyed showcasing their talents on stage.
By donating to this project, you will be helping my students gain access to a wider variety of classroom instruments, including alto and tenor recorders, so that we can make our class and our next performance even more diverse.
We are fortunate enough to have some instruments that are provided by the district, such as soprano recorders, xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels. As I have begun writing my own Orffestrations, I have recognized the need for a wider variety of low-sounding instruments. Thus, this project will allow my students to play and hear the differences between soprano recorders and alto/tenor recorders and will help them to see how the size of an instrument can sometimes influence the instrument's sound.
