Our classroom is not the only place for learning! We love to get out into the real resource, nature, when studying our Earth's Systems Unit in 6th Grade! This year, we are going to take weather predictions into our own hands!
A future meteorologist, science teacher, archaeologist, farmer, and biologist appear in my classroom every afternoon!
My students may have grown up in a small rural community, but that does not keep them from exploring the greater picture of science. Some students know how weather patterns affect their crops, other students want to know how we make the forecast, but all students want to know more about the atmosphere around us. Our school is located in a large open space to set up a weather station to safely track elements in our atmosphere.
My Project
We are raising funds for a weather instrument kit to help us have more hands-on experience in collecting scientific weather data. Anyone can find the information online, but if a student collects the data and patterns the weather, maybe they can predict it better than the local weatherman! Our district prides itself on creating "21st Century Learners", and the weather instrument kit would allow for our students to problem solve, design a project that can accurately collect, report, and predict weather patterns in our area. These collaborative skills will help them through their years in education and post-high school path. Students will be able to learn how to use the instruments in general science classes, and then deepen their understanding of patterns in the weather on a larger level in their STEM classes.
The weather instruments will give us updated equipment and more accurate equipment than what we have purchased from the local hardware store.
With a lower socioeconomic status, most of my students have not seen or used accurate science instruments. With our 1:1 Technology Initiative, students would be able to use their data collection to create reports and presentations to demonstrate their understanding in a deeper more meaningful way.
