My average day in the classroom begins when I welcome my eighth grade students including regular students, students receiving special education services, and students with emotional needs. I want all of my students to succeed.
My students like to participate in the school drama club, which is why I sponsor this activity.
I teach in a large, diverse, K-8 high-poverty school in an urban area that experiences crime. Our school receives Title I funding, and the entire school is eligible for free breakfast and lunch. The students come to school eager to learn, from various living situations such as single parent homes, foster homes, homeless shelters, or extended family living.
My students are the most eccentric, funny, and smart kids you would ever want to meet. Skill levels and overall levels of support vary by student. One thing that is universal is our desire to work together. On the first day of school, we identified ourselves as a family. We are a family that takes care of one another and looks out for one another; this is what we do. We work together to accomplish our goals.
My Project
Our classroom is a very unique place...for so many reasons. First of all, you will always see students working hard and doing their best. However, throughout the day there is constantly the motion of students putting hoodies on and then taking them off. You see, our heater has a mind of its own.
One minute our room is sweltering and we are opening windows and turning on a fan, and the very next the "heater" is blowing cold, blistering air.
We never know what to expect. With a new fan and a space heater, we will be able to combat these sudden changes and be ready for anything that is thrown at us.
At the end of the day, I want my students to be comfortable in our classroom, because when they feel good, they will put their best effort forward. A combination of appropriate temperatures and sweet-smelling scents will make our classroom THE place to be in school!
