Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Recently, our school district added a visual arts class in the elementary schools. This is a great opportunity for our students; however, this addition was made by changing the students' music classes from twice a week to once a week... Cutting our music time in half has made each minute within our classes a crucial opportunity for learning!
My students are amazing!
They are eager to learn and love having opportunities to experience and explore new adventures.
This year will be my third at DES. Before the previous two years, the students hadn't had the chance to play recorder or have a school choir. The former music teacher had two programs a school year. The kids didn't have the chance to perform for their parents. They love performing for their parents! They light up with pride and self-confidence as they succeed and their parents share in these successes.
Music is the start of a journey that all the kids can take: drumming in Africa, singing games in Europe, dancing in Latin America! The possibilities are endless. A new discovery is available every single day!
My Project
My students have been recently introduced to the joys of playing a smaller barred instrument, namely the glockenspiel. This metal barred instrument is a tiny relative of the xylophone or metallophone.
While the students love playing the glockenspiels, they would be even more successful if they could have the instruments up off of the floor.
The glockenspiels are approximately one and a half inches high which makes playing them challenging. The students are bent very close to the ground and aiming at tiny bars. In spite of the challenges in playing these smaller instruments, the students vie with one another for the opportunity to do so!
Providing the students with the firm foundation of a table for the instruments will help the students be more successful in playing the glockenspiels. The students will be able to play with more confidence and ease.Their successes will allow us to work on more challenging pieces.
