How Does Your Garden Grow?

My students need soil for gardening and lights to make everything grow.

My Students

My students keep me on my toes. Most of them are Spanish speaking English language learners. They offer a unique perspective and insight into every topic we study, and I often feel like I'm just as much a learner as their teacher. They're a lively bunch, and since I get to teach them year after year, we have grown quite close and we would all agree that we feel like a family.

Sometimes I forget that they have a challenging life outside of their 8-4 school day.

Most of my students live in shelters or temporary housing. They receive free breakfast and lunch and "blessings" to take home in the evenings. It's hard to get by in New York, and the public school system has very much become a respite for young folks trapped in situations in which they have no control. I would do anything for my students, and that is why I am posting here on

My Project

Anyone tired of watching students open bags of chips (or even worse, Takis) for snack? I sure am. How about asking students where food comes from, and getting "the store" as an answer? Unfortunately, this is the reality for so many urban youth. They haven't experienced the joy of growing anything from the soil. They don't know how simple and rewarding it is to make your own food.

Let's promote healthy eating!

I want my students to know they can have cheap, delicious food from their own labor. Unfortunately, in NYC, we can't plant anything edible in the ground. We are fortunate enough to have containers for planting, but we need healthy soil for our vegetables to grow. We are fortunate enough to have containers, and also seeds, but we are missing grow lights for sprouting and soil. Please help us improve the diets of these students. Their future depends on it.
